Opening a shop, what software(s) is everyone using?

Main Post:

I'm opening up my own shop, and obviously I'm going to use something like ProDemand for repairs/diagnostics, however, their shop manager is really ugly and dated in my eyes.

Does anyone have any suggestions to something more Modern, like Shop Monkey or AutoLeap, with a little nicer of a price tag?

Edit: ended up going with TekMetric after trialing both. It’s been since February and I’ve had zero complaints.

Is SoftWare Shop a legitimate Microsoft supplier?

Main Post:

First, I am a relative amateur and here to learn for now.

Receive a “too-good-to-be-true” offer; contacted Microsoft support and the agent says it is okay (?), but I am a true skeptic.

Ad is below. Is anyone familiar with this outfit?

Thank you.

Mark

What I think about the Pop!_Shop and the GNOME Software Center

Main Post:

When I was upgrading my Pop!_OS system to 22.04, I saw that the ability to install the GNOME Software Center without any problems was added. After installing it, I saw that look WAAAAAY better than the Pop!_Shop, which was built on the elementary OS AppCenter.

Unlike the Pop!_Shop, you can install apps from Snapcraft, which is one of my favorite parts.

The UI also looks nice compared to the Pop!_Shop. The download size, compatibility, and rating cards are equally aligned.

What I am saying is this: The Software Center is MUCH better than the Pop!_Shop.Pop!_OS users should be able to remove the Pop!_Shop from their system.

But that's just my opinion.

Top Comment:

Interesting to have the option to install apps from Snapcraft, but I'd rather avoid that. Ime snap apps in general load slower than flatpaks. I only use one snap application and it's because there is no flatpak available.

[Help] Tinfoil shop games "Unable to start software, return to home menu and try again". but DBI installs work.

Main Post:

Need some help. So I've done a clean wipe of my previous atmosphere and installed using the JustInsertTheStuff.01.19.2022.zip package.

I added my titspro access to tinfoil and installed this game as a reference (Ammo pigs: cocked and loaded) got this message "Unable to start software, return to home menu and try again". Tinfoil install options was with "Convert to standard crypto" enabled.

Strangest thing is my other games that I installed with DBI works fine. Its just tinfoil shops downloads that fail to run. Have been tearing my hair out over this

EDIT: Fixed

Top Comment: Same for me, going into recovery mode and leaving seems to fix it

Software vs Trading vs QR at quant shops?

Main Post:

At quant hedge funds, prop shops, hft, etc. I notice that there tend to be three different roles: quant traders, quant researchers, and software engineers.

I've always heard that wherever you work, its better to be closer to the cashflow. (ex. Google is a tech company so you want to be swe there) In the case of these quant shops, traders are directly managing the cash flow, and even quant researchers are closer to the cash flow than a swe.

Is it better to be a trader here vs QR vs software engineer?

Also a tangentially related question. In general, do traders at these firms program as well? Or just use the models and tools from software engineers.

I know this is a subjective question and probably missing the point, but I always hear of swe at quant shops as being paid super highly and I'm just not sure how to reconcile this with the phenomenon I just mentioned.

So, most of this will vary a LOT firm to firm, because every firm does stuff differently. At HFT firms you probably won't even have "Traders", but at semi-systematic places like SIG and Jane Street you'll have both Traders and QRs. Whether it's "better" to work in one or the other really varies based on your interests. You won't be treated as "second class" in any of them, and comp for both tends to grow with performance more than anything from what I understand. Also, be careful about names, as they can be misleading: Tower, for example, has a role called "Quantitative Trader" but it's really more of a QR role.

The amount of coding traders do really depends on the shop. At SIG, as I understand it, traders are doing close to no coding, whereas at Citadel it depends a lot on the desk you're assigned to. Some traders write a lot of code, some write none or close to none. QRs tend to do a good amount of coding.

For devs, it really depends on the place. At some firms, you're treated very well, and it's a front office role. At others, you're not. Here's an angry post about someone who did a SWE internship at Citadel and didn't realize that it's really just a SWE role that supports traders (https://www.reddit.com/r/cscareerquestions/comments/dzwh2j/psa_working_in_quant_finance_citadel_two_sigma_as/). That person tried to extrapolate this to other firms but people from those firms said that it works differently at other firms. I've even heard that at HRT devs are treated even better than the QRs, but I don't know how true this is.

Disclaimer: I've just done an internship and will be starting full time in the industry, so all my knowledge is from other interns/new grads in the industry and gathered from talking to people at interviews and desk visits. Senior people at these places almost certainly have stronger info, but I thought I'd put in the info that I've seen, because senior people rarely respond to these threads.

What software does your shop use to plan production, see how loaded a machine is etc?

Main Post:

Starting a new job in an old-school shop, looking to help the owners upgrade the shop a bit :)

Top Comment:

You should maybe work there a while and get a feel for how they do things and ask them if they want to be "upgraded" before just assuming they want help.
